Taking Care of Dumpsters in Winter

Taking Care of Dumpsters in Winter

February 24, 2022 Leave a Comment

Freezing temperatures with snow, rain and ice are not the ideal conditions for much of anything to be in its best shape, including a dumpster. Dumpsters are generally pretty tough, but winter can be challenging for almost everything. However, there are steps you can take to make sure that your dumpster is prepared for winter weather.

Taking Care of Dumpsters in Winter

Identify the Right Spot

The first thing you should do to prepare your dumpster for winter is plan where to put your dumpster so it doesn’t obstruct the snow plowing process. It’s also a good idea to place your dumpster under a shade. Doing so keeps the snow from piling up on the dumpster, which can cause the top to be weighed down and possibly warp.

Cover Your Dumpsters During Winters

Covering your dumpsters with a tarp keeps snow and rain from getting in the dumpster. Additionally, don’t forget to cover the latches and fasteners to prevent them from freezing. When latches and fasteners get frozen, they can require excessive force to open, costing you time and possibly causing damage to the dumpster as well.

Keep the Area Around the Dumpster Plowed

To make sure that your dumpster gets delivered and picked up with ease, you should keep the area around it free of snow. Keeping the area around the dumpster plowed will also make the dumpster easier to use for you and keep your property clean.

De-Ice the Walkway

A simple task like walking to your dumpster and coming back from it becomes tricky during winters because of ice and snow. The last thing you want is to slip while you are carrying trash bags out to the dumpster. Once the snow is cleared away on the path, take the time to put down sand or salt to keep the walkway safer for you and your employees.

Protect Yourself from the Cold

In winter weather, it’s always important to dress appropriately for the cold. Whenever you’re venturing outside to bring trash to the dumpster, protect yourself by wearing layers, a coat, hat, and gloves. Gloves are especially important as they will protect your skin from the cold of the metal when you open the dumpster.
